Psychobiography was first based on the research orientation of psychoanalysis and personality psychology, and has now developed into a branch of psychology between psychology, literature and history. It is based on systematic psychological theory, through the in-depth analysis of individual cases to explain, predict and control the field of specific individual behavior. In the history of the development of psychology, it is mainly used in military, politics and diplomacy. Before World War II, the U.S. Intelligence Service (the predecessor of the CIA) had applied psychobiographical research to predict Hitler's behavior with great success. During the Cold War, the US military applied this kind of research to the analysis of the heads of socialist countries (such as Stalin, Mao Zedong, Kim Jong-il, etc.), and used it as the basis for political decision-making. UC Berkeley and Davis have been cultivating master's and doctoral students in this field decades ago. For decades, research and education in psychobiography has not only played an important role in promoting the development of qualitative psychology, which represents the current orientation of humanistic psychology, but has also created opportunities for the wider application of psychology. In addition, it can make up for the lack of research on the general principles of mainstream psychology to a certain extent. Since the 1980s, the narrative turn of psychology has brought psychobiography to an unprecedented height in the international psychology community. However, unfortunately, the study of psychobiography has not received due attention in China, and there is no specialized research institution in China, and there is also a lack of research teams trying to apply this kind of research to practice. Based on the significance and application value of psychobiography to the development of psychology, the School of Psychology established this institute.
